Tinubu Urges Senate to Amend Constitution for State Police

President Bola Tinubu has called on the leadership of the 10th Senate to begin the process of amending the Constitution to create a legal framework for state police.

He made the appeal during an interfaith breakfast with senators at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Tinubu said decentralised policing has become necessary to tackle terrorism, banditry and insurgency across the country.

He explained that state police would complement existing federal security structures and strengthen community based security responses.

According to him, such a move would improve intelligence gathering and ensure faster responses to threats at the grassroots level.

The president also commended the cooperation between the executive and the legislature, saying unity between both arms of government is vital to addressing national security challenges.

Tinubu thanked the Senate for supporting key economic reforms of his administration, including fuel subsidy removal and tax policies.

He said the reforms have improved government revenue and contributed to economic stability.

In his remarks, Senate President Godswill Akpabio praised the president’s leadership and said ongoing reforms have increased revenue available to state governments for infrastructure development.

Akpabio also offered prayers for peace, stability and prosperity in the country.
