UK, Canada, Australia Recognise Palestine as Independent State

In a coordinated diplomatic shift, three major Western nations, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, have formally recognised Palestine as an independent state.

The announcement was first made by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who stated that the decision aimed to revive stalled peace talks between the Palestinians and Israelis.

“Today, to help restore the peace process and advance the two-state solution, the United Kingdom officially recognises the State of Palestine,” Starmer said in a statement on Sunday.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed the move shortly after on his official X handle, writing: “Canada recognises the State of Palestine, and we extend our support to efforts that can bring lasting peace between Palestinians and Israelis.”

Hours later, the Australian government also declared full recognition of Palestine.

The three countries now join several others that have taken similar steps ahead of the United Nations General Assembly, which begins on Monday.
