The United Nations Security Council has begun an emergency meeting following US and Israeli strikes on Iran and Tehran’s retaliatory attacks across multiple countries in the region.

Opening the session, UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that the situation risks spiraling beyond control.

“Military action carries the risk of igniting a chain of events that no one can control in the most volatile region of the world,” Guterres said, noting that approximately 20 cities in Iran had reportedly been hit.

He acknowledged reports that senior Iranian leaders may have been killed but said the United Nations could not independently verify those claims.

“I call for de-escalation and an immediate cessation of hostilities,” Guterres said.

“The alternative is a potential wider conflict with grave consequences for civilians and regional stability. I strongly urge all parties to return immediately to the negotiating table.”
