Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi says the U.S.’s designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over insecurity should concern every Nigerian.
Reacting on X, Obi described the move as a reflection of Nigeria’s deepening security crisis and failure of leadership. He cited Amnesty International reports showing over 10,000 deaths since May 2023, calling the killings “unprovoked and condemnable.”
“While insecurity didn’t begin with this government, its poor leadership and misuse of resources have made things worse,” Obi said. “Nigeria needs leaders who can govern effectively and ensure justice and peace for all.”
He also warned that rising tensions should not harm U.S.-Nigeria relations, stressing that both nations must work together to address security concerns.
