We’ll Only Believe Govt Promises When Actions Follow - UNILAG ASUU

The University of Lagos chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) says it is taking a cautious stance on the federal government’s latest agreement, citing years of unfulfilled promises.

Speaking to Nigeria Info, UNILAG ASUU Chairman, Prof. Idou Keinde, dismissed last week’s public unveiling of the agreement as a mere “funfair and paparazzi.”

“The agreement was already signed on December 23. What was the purpose of all that show?” he asked.

Prof. Keinde also questioned the government’s claim that the agreement is effective from January 1. “When we see its implementation, we will know,” he said.

Asked how long the union would wait before evaluating the agreement, he suggested giving the government until March, noting that progress largely depends on budgetary provisions.

The ASUU chairman also highlighted ongoing issues, pointing out that lecturers are still owed promotion arrears dating back to 2019.

“Remember, we are still being owed promotions since 2019. So which confidence, which optimism do you expect us to have?” he asked.

Prof. Keinde concluded by stressing that the union will judge the agreement solely based on action, not announcements.
