FCT minister, Nyesom Wike, has mocked the sudden exit of the incumbent governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, from the All Progressives Congress governorship race.
Wike, who broke his silence on the dramatic political shifts rocking Rivers State over the last 72 hours, declared that the emergence of Kingsley Chinda as the 2027 APC gubernatorial candidate is a welcome development.
Speaking with reporters on Monday, Wike revealed that a strict political agreement had been reached between warring factions to drop the impending impeachment threats against Fubara on the sole condition that he would not seek a second term in office.
While the governor's eventual withdrawal satisfies the core of that peace agreement, Wike strongly criticized him for purchasing the nomination forms in the first place, calling the move a betrayal of political trust and a violation of the deal.
"In the first place, he ought not to have collected the form, because agreement was reached that the impeachment should be dropped, while he should also not go about a second term," Wike stated.
He added that Fubara's initial defiance "didn't show a sign of gentlemanship" and undermined the multiple peace interventions led by the President.
"But whatever it is, he has withdrawn, and somebody has emerged."
Wike expressed complete confidence in the emergence of the current minority leader of the House of Representatives, Kingsley Chinda, as a frontline governorship candidate.
He hinted that Chinda’s legislative pedigree and political weight made him an irresistible choice, prompting APC to approach him.
"A good product markets itself. Everybody knows that Kingsley Chinda is the material.
"He's quite experienced. He has worked with the executive, and now in the legislature. I'm sure that he must have been approached by the All Progressives Congress to join them and then get the ticket," Wike stated.
