Zverev Wins First Grand Slam Title After Years of Near Misses

World No. 3, German's Alexander Zverev, has won the 2026 French Open, defeating Italy’s Flavio Cobolli in a dramatic five-set final to secure the first Grand Slam title of his career.

Zverev came through a tense contest 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 in a match that lasted over four hours, showing resilience and composure to finally break his Grand Slam barrier.

‎The victory marks a defining moment in the career of the 29-year-old, who had previously suffered multiple heartbreaks on tennis’ biggest stage.

‎Before this triumph in Paris, Zverev had lost three Grand Slam finals, including the 2020 US Open, the 2024 French Open where he led before losing to Carlos Alcaraz, and the 2025 Australian Open.

‎He had also endured several semi-final exits at Roland Garros, despite consistently being among the strongest performers on clay.

‎Zverev’s journey to the title this year reflected both his experience and determination. He defeated Spain’s Rafael Jodar in the quarter-finals in straight sets before overcoming Czech youngster Jakub Mensik in four sets to reach the final.

‎In the final, Cobolli pushed him to the limit, forcing a deciding set after winning a fourth-set tie-break. But Zverev responded emphatically, dominating the fifth set to seal victory and end years of frustration.

‎The 2026 tournament had opened up significantly following the early exits and withdrawals of top players, including Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, and Jannik Sinner, ensuring that a first-time Grand Slam champion would be crowned.

‎For Zverev, the win adds a Grand Slam title to an already decorated career that includes an Olympic gold medal, confirming his place among the elite players of his generation.

‎His triumph in Paris is widely seen as a moment of redemption, finally converting years of promise and consistency into success on the biggest stage.

‎For Cobolli, the defeat ends a breakthrough tournament in which the Italian reached his first Grand Slam final, underlining his emergence as one of the rising stars in men’s tennis.

‎Zverev’s victory not only ends his long wait for a major title but also signals the beginning of a new chapter in men’s tennis, with a new generation now firmly taking centre stage.
