Democrats Win US Senate, Near House Majority in Midterm Elections

Democrats have won control of the United States Senate and are closing in on a majority in the House of Representatives following significant gains in Tuesday's midterm elections.

The results represent a major setback for President Donald Trump and the Republican Party, with voters expressing concerns over rising living costs, tariffs, the war with Iran and the administration's policies.

The Democratic gains in the Senate will give the party greater influence over legislation, government oversight and presidential appointments during the final two years of Trump's presidency.

Several Republican-held Senate seats fell to Democrats, including races in Texas, Kansas, South Carolina, North Carolina and Ohio.

In Kansas, Democratic candidate James Talarico secured a major victory, while other Democratic gains extended to traditionally Republican areas.

Democrats also recorded victories in gubernatorial races, including Georgia and Texas, where Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican incumbent Greg Abbott.

However, all eyes remain on the House of Representatives as votes continue to be counted, with Democrats seeking to secure a majority.

The results followed a campaign in which Republicans struggled to defend their narrow congressional majorities amid public concerns about the economy and the administration's handling of the Iran conflict.

Trump told The New York Times he was willing to accept the election results and work with Democrats. However, he later posted an image of a red cap bearing the word "VETO" on social media, signalling his readiness to block legislation he opposes.

Democratic leaders have indicated that control of Congress would allow them to scrutinise the administration's policies, including its handling of the Iran war, immigration enforcement and allegations of corruption.

The Senate outcome also gives Democrats greater leverage over the confirmation of judicial and senior government appointments.

The new Congress is expected to take office in January 2027.
