United States Vice President JD Vance has blamed the war involving Iran for the Republican Party’s losses in the 2026 midterm elections, saying many voters who supported President Donald Trump and Vance in 2024 switched their support to Democrats.
In a lengthy post on his official X account, Vance said the party’s problem was not voter turnout but dissatisfaction among some of its previous supporters.
However, he said an analysis of voter behaviour indicated that some Trump-Vance supporters from the 2024 presidential election were dissatisfied with the administration and intended to vote for Democrats.
Using Florida as an example, Vance said the electorate was nine percentage points more Republican than Democratic, only slightly below the party's 2024 performance.
He argued that the main problem was not voter turnout but the defection of some Republican supporters to the opposition.
Vance also acknowledged that the party's economic messaging may not have been effective enough during the final stages of the campaign.
He cited feedback from a pollster, who said voters who had abandoned the Republicans identified four major reasons for their decision: the war, the cost of living and inflation, the administration's commitment to putting America first, and the country's relationship with Israel.
According to Vance, those issues accounted for nearly all the responses from voters asked what could bring them back to the Republican Party.
He described the war as the main reason for the party's electoral losses and said President Trump had also acknowledged its impact.
Vance warned against attempts by Republican establishment figures to blame the results on other issues, including immigration policy. While expressing openness to changes in immigration enforcement, he opposed proposals for amnesty.
He also challenged supporters who believe the war was justified to acknowledge the political cost of the decision, including the loss of control of the Senate, as he described it.
Despite the setback, Vance urged Republicans to use their frustration to support candidates who share their political views and continue working towards the party's goals.
