Russian Strikes Cut Power to 850,000 Customers in Ukraine

Russian strikes on energy infrastructure have disrupted electricity supplies to about 850,000 customers in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk and Kharkiv regions, as Moscow intensifies attacks on the country’s power network ahead of another winter of war.

The overnight attacks damaged energy facilities in both regions, Ukrainian authorities and power provider DTEK said Sunday.

DTEK reported that more than 600,000 residents in Dnipropetrovsk were left without electricity after what it described as a “night attack” on critical energy facilities.

The company said repair crews were working to restore power but warned that repeated attacks were complicating the operation.

In Kharkiv, a Russian drone struck a critical infrastructure facility in Zlatopil, Mayor Mykola Baksheyev said.

“Nearly 250,000 customers in the Kharkiv region were left without power,” Baksheyev said, adding that repair work was underway but the time for restoring electricity remained uncertain.

The latest attacks followed a major Russian assault on Ukrainian energy facilities a day earlier, which the Energy Ministry said cut power in five regions and disrupted electricity transmission in Kyiv.

President Volodymyr Zelensky has accused Moscow of intensifying its attacks to pressure Ukraine ahead of U.S.-brokered trilateral talks in Abu Dhabi scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.

Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure since its full-scale invasion, raising concerns about electricity and heating supplies as temperatures approach freezing.

Ukrainian authorities are now facing renewed pressure to restore damaged facilities and protect the power network ahead of another harsh winter.
