11 Feared Dead After Vehicle Falls Off Ogun Bridge

No fewer than 11 persons have died after a vehicle plunged off the Eruku Bridge along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in Ogun State.

The accident occurred late Saturday night, according to the Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

In a statement issued on Sunday, the FRSC spokesperson in the state, Florence Okpe, said the crash involved a gold Toyota vehicle with registration number GGE722KJ.

She explained that the vehicle reportedly somersaulted before plunging off the bridge, trapping occupants inside after the doors locked on impact.

“All 11 occupants of the vehicle, comprising 10 adult males and one adult female, lost their lives in the crash,” the statement said.

FRSC rescue operatives from the Itori Unit Command were immediately deployed to the scene following the incident.

According to the statement, FRSC personnel, assisted by members of the local community, dismantled parts of the vehicle to recover the victims’ bodies.

The remains of the deceased were later deposited at the State Specialist Hospital morgue in Ifo.

The FRSC attributed the crash to suspected driving under the influence and overloading.

Reacting to the incident, the Ogun State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, urged motorists travelling along the Abeokuta-Lagos corridor to drive cautiously, especially at night.

He also commiserated with the families of the victims.

The latest incident adds to a growing number of fatal crashes recorded along major highways in Ogun State, amid repeated warnings by road safety authorities against speeding, drunk driving and overloading.
