11 Killed in Mass Shooting Near South African City of Durban

At least 11 people have been killed in a mass shooting at a residential building in KwaMakhutha township near the South African city of Durban.

Police said three gunmen stormed a house late Tuesday and opened fire on 14 people who were reportedly attending a party.

Ten people were killed at the scene, while four others were taken to hospital. Police said one of the injured victims later died.

According to police, 13 men and one woman were inside the house when the attackers arrived. The woman, who was believed to be pregnant, was among those killed.

Police said some of the victims were being monitored in connection with suspected illegal activities, but declined to provide further details, saying the information could affect the ongoing investigation.

The motive for the attack has not been established, although police said they could not rule out a possible feud between rival groups.

A local television reporter from eNCA said the attackers also set fire to a vehicle belonging to one of the victims before fleeing the scene.

Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects.

The shooting comes amid continuing concerns over violent crime in South Africa, which has one of the world's highest murder rates. Police data indicate that more than 60 people are killed in the country each day.
