No fewer than 13 members of the House of Representatives have defected from their political parties, citing internal crises, leadership disputes and the need to better serve their constituents.
The defections were announced during Tuesday's plenary after Speaker Tajudeen Abbas read letters from the lawmakers notifying the House of their decisions.
Among those who switched parties were members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP), with several lawmakers citing unresolved internal disagreements and consultations with constituents as reasons for their moves.
The House also recorded the defection of six lawmakers from Oyo State, who left the PDP for the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), blaming persistent leadership challenges and divisions within the party.
Meanwhile, former Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda resigned from his position following his defection from the PDP to the APC.
Chinda, who recently emerged as the APC governorship candidate for the 2027 Rivers State election, said his resignation marks the end of his tenure as leader of the opposition caucus in the House.
