President Bola Tinubu has pledged continued government support for the Nigeria Police Force to ensure peaceful and secure general elections in 2027.
Tinubu made the commitment on Monday in Owerri, Imo State, while declaring open the sixth Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers, CARSPO 2026.
The President was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
The conference is themed, “Developing a Nigeria Police Roadmap for Effective Management of Security During Elections.”
Tinubu stressed the need for professionalism, impartiality, intelligence led policing and stronger coordination among security agencies.
He also assured the police of continued support in training, technology, operational logistics, welfare and institutional reforms.
At the conference, Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu unveiled a six pillar framework for the Force’s election security roadmap.
The pillars cover stronger intelligence and early warning systems, intensive training and preparedness, joint command and inter agency coordination, effective communication and technology, community partnership and absolute neutrality.
Disu directed Commissioners of Police to identify and map potential electoral flashpoints, criminal networks and other emerging threats in their commands.
He also ordered them to strengthen early warning systems and community based intelligence ahead of the elections.
The IGP announced that the Nigeria Police Force will release an official public election complaints line on October 12, 2026.
He warned against political violence, voter intimidation, vote buying and other electoral offences.
Disu said police officers found taking sides, harassing voters, working with political actors or abusing their powers would be held accountable.
He said the conference, which coincided with the International Day of Peace, was a reminder that maintaining peace requires professionalism, public trust and early action to prevent violence.
The conference brought together senior officials from the security and justice sectors, as well as former Inspectors General of Police and representatives of the Police Community Relations Committee.
Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma welcomed the participants and said he was pleased that the state was hosting the conference and retreat for the fourth time.
The Nigeria Police Force said it remained committed to professional, neutral and intelligence led policing, stronger inter agency cooperation and sustained community engagement ahead of the 2027 elections.
