2027: I’m Contesting for President, Not Atiku’s Running Mate – Peter Obi Declares

Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has formally declared his intention to contest for Nigeria’s presidency in 2027.

Obi made the announcement during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, aired on Sunday evening amidst ongoing speculation of a possible alliance with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

When asked directly about his political ambition, the former governor was unequivocal:

“I’m going to contest for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, and I believe I am qualified for it,” he said.

Dismissing the rumours that he may emerge as Atiku’s vice-presidential candidate under a proposed opposition coalition, Obi stated:

“This is not in play; nobody has ever discussed that. People assume so many things. Nobody has ever discussed with me whether I am going to be A or B or C.”

Obi reaffirmed his commitment to the Labour Party, under which he contested in 2023, but also confirmed his participation in a broader opposition front. He revealed that he is actively involved in a political coalition including the African Democratic Congress (ADC) seeking to produce a unified candidate capable of defeating President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.

“I am part of the coalition which will be able to produce a president with the capacity and compassion to save this country,” he added.
