The African Action Congress, AAC, has adopted human rights activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, as its consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
The decision was announced during the party’s presidential primary, where members unanimously endorsed Sowore to fly the party’s flag in the next presidential election.
Chairman of the Primary Election Committee, Kayode Babayemi, said the endorsement reflected the party’s confidence in Sowore’s commitment to democracy, justice and good governance.
According to Babayemi, the AAC believes Sowore has remained consistent in leadership and committed to the struggle for freedom and democratic ideals in Nigeria.
Accepting the nomination, Sowore described the AAC as the only genuine opposition party in the country, insisting it remains focused on providing Nigerians with a credible alternative.
He maintained that the party had survived political pressure and remained independent of godfatherism and corrupt influences, while also dismissing calls for a coalition with established political parties.
Sowore stated that the AAC was built on the collective efforts of ordinary Nigerians and not on what he described as structures of criminality, incompetence or insecurity.
The AAC presidential candidate also criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress over the country’s current challenges and urged international financial institutions, including the International Monetary Fund, to stop granting loans to Nigerian politicians.
