ActionAid Nigeria Demands Impeachment of Governors Over Alleged Campaign Fund Misuse

A non-governmental organisation, ActionAid Nigeria, has called for the impeachment of any state governor found to have used public funds for political campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The organisation expressed concern over reports alleging that some serving governors may have mobilised huge sums of money to finance political activities and consolidate power ahead of the next election cycle.

In a statement signed Tuesday in Abuja, ActionAid Nigeria Country Director, Andrew Mamedu, described the allegations as “outrageous, reckless, immoral and completely unacceptable.”

“It is appalling that at a time when Nigeria is drowning in debt, workers are struggling with the rising cost of living, public hospitals are underfunded, schools are collapsing, and millions are battling hardship, there are suggestions that public resources may be diverted for political campaigns,” Mamedu said.

He warned that governors were elected to serve citizens, not to convert state resources into “political war chests.”

ActionAid demanded immediate public clarification from governors and political actors allegedly linked to the reports, urging them to disclose whether the funds came from legitimate private fundraising or public resources.

The group also called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, and state Houses of Assembly to launch independent investigations into the allegations.

Mamedu said any governor found guilty should face impeachment, prosecution, and the recovery of diverted funds.

“Any governor who diverts public resources for political campaigns has violated public trust and abused the mandate given to them by citizens,” he said.

The organisation warned that unchecked abuse of state resources could weaken democratic institutions and give incumbents an unfair political advantage ahead of the 2027 elections.

ActionAid also urged citizens, civil society groups, and whistleblowers to remain vigilant and report suspicious spending linked to political activities.
