ADC Leaders Declare “Moment to Change Nigeria” at Abuja Convention

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) opened its 2026 national convention in Abuja, with party leaders declaring the gathering a turning point in efforts to reshape Nigeria’s political future.

ADC National Chairman, Sen. David Mark, said the party and its coalition partners are on a mission to offer Nigerians “a disciplined, principled, and committed” alternative to the current political order.

“This is a defining moment in our political history; a moment that calls on all patriots to stand up for our democracy and our country,” Mark said.

“The African Democratic Congress was founded on conviction that politics must be a call to service, not a ladder for personal ambition.”

He said the party had faced “externally manufactured crises” and political pressure but insisted it had emerged stronger, describing ADC as “a voice for the people” and “a force for national transformation.”

Mark warned against what he described as efforts to weaken opposition politics, saying Nigeria must not drift toward a “one-party state,” which he called “a gateway to tyranny and dictatorship.”

“We will not surrender, because what is at stake is not just the ADC, but the survival of our democracy,” he said.

Convention Planning Committee Chairman, Sen. Liyel Imoke, said the gathering reflected “a convergence of purpose” among party members and coalition partners.

“We have moved forward despite legal challenges, delays, and attempts to frustrate this convention. But here we are,” Imoke said.

“This spirit tells us something important about who we are becoming.”

The convention is expected to ratify a new constitution and manifesto and set the party’s direction ahead of the 2027 general elections.
