ADC Slams Govt Over GDP Claims, Says Nigerians ‘Cannot Eat Statistics’

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised the Federal Government’s celebration of Nigeria’s reported GDP growth, saying it does not reflect the worsening economic hardship facing citizens.

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said economic statistics are meaningless if they do not translate into improved living standards.

“People do not eat GDP,” the ADC said. “Economic growth that does not reduce suffering, create jobs, improve incomes, or restore dignity to citizens is empty growth.”

The party said millions of Nigerians continue to struggle with rising food prices, high transport costs, unemployment, and the collapse of small businesses despite official claims of economic progress.

It argued that the reality of the economy is best reflected in everyday experiences in markets, farms, factories, and homes across the country.

“The reality of the Nigerian economy is what Nigerians confront every day in markets, on farms, in factories, in shops, and in their homes,” the statement read.

The ADC said food inflation has become “unbearable,” while businesses are shutting down under pressure from inflation, energy costs, and weak consumer demand.

It accused the government of focusing on “celebrating statistics” instead of addressing worsening living conditions.

“What exactly should Nigerians celebrate?” the party asked, adding that many citizens are slipping deeper into poverty despite working harder.

The ADC said economic growth must be judged by its impact on ordinary people, including access to affordable food, stable electricity, decent jobs, and improved purchasing power.

It warned that until Nigerians feel tangible improvements in their daily lives, the government has “no moral basis” to declare economic success.
