The African Democratic Congress has criticized the National Assembly’s handling of the Electoral Act amendment, calling the proceedings disgraceful and warning that they undermine Nigeria’s democracy.
Speaking with Kofi Bartels on Nigeria Info’s Morning Crossfire, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi said lawmakers appeared to have arrived with premeditated conclusions, driven by the majority party.
He accused the APC-led legislature of removing mandatory real-time electronic transmission of results, creating potential loopholes for electoral malpractice.
Abdullahi said opposition lawmakers, including ADC members, voiced dissent and pushed for line-by-line consideration, but were overruled.
He questioned why lawmakers would resist real-time transmission when INEC has repeatedly stated it has the capacity to implement it.
“Decisions in the Assembly may be taken through voting, but that does not mean they are right,” he said, calling the amendment a setback for electoral transparency.
Abdullahi added that opposition parties would meet to plan a collective response, insisting the amendment does not reflect the wishes of many Nigerians and could erode public confidence in future elections.
