Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is expected to resign in the coming days after receiving approval from Bola Ahmed Tinubu to contest the Oyo State governorship in 2027.
The development followed a meeting at the Presidential Villa, where Tinubu reportedly commended Adelabu’s performance and gave his backing for the political move.
According to a statement by his aide, Adelabu will step down to focus on his ambition, in line with directives for cabinet members seeking elective office.
During the meeting, the minister presented a report on his time in office, highlighting reforms in electricity generation, transmission and policy development.
He also outlined key frameworks aimed at improving energy security, expanding access and integrating renewable energy.
Adelabu is expected to seek the ticket of the All Progressives Congress in Oyo State, having previously contested the position.
His planned exit comes amid broader cabinet changes as the administration prepares for the next election cycle.
Despite reform efforts, his tenure has faced criticism over ongoing power supply challenges and rising tariffs.
