Osun State Gov. Ademola Adeleke has thanked residents for renewing his mandate, describing his re-election as a victory for democracy and an endorsement of his administration's performance.
Adeleke spoke shortly after the Independent National Electoral Commission declared him winner of Saturday's governorship election.
Speaking amid celebrations with supporters, Adeleke said he was grateful to God and the people who supported his administration.
“I feel great. First of all, I thank God Almighty for what has happened today. It's a victory for democracy in Nigeria,” Adeleke said.
He said the result represented a vote of confidence from residents who believed his administration had delivered dividends of democracy, particularly in infrastructure, education and agriculture.
He described the outcome as “the people saying thank you” to his administration.
Adeleke also called for reconciliation after the closely contested election, saying there should be “no victor, no vanquished.”
He said he expected his main challenger, All Progressives Congress candidate Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, to congratulate him as a “civilized person.”
Adeleke also thanked President Bola Tinubu for calling to congratulate him, saying the president's conduct had helped ensure that democracy prevailed.
“I want to seize this opportunity to thank Mr. President. Mr. President has called me and he has congratulated me,” Adeleke said.
He described the president's intervention as a contribution to sustaining democracy.
Asked whether he had at any point feared that he might not win the election, Adeleke attributed his confidence to his faith in God.
The governor secured 511,067 votes in Saturday's election, according to the results announced by INEC.
