
The World Food Prize Foundation has announcd the appointment of Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, the outgoing President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), to its Council of Advisors.
This announcement was made by the Foundation's President, Mashal Husain, in a statement released in New York on Tuesday.
Adesina, who will complete his second five-year term at the AfDB in September, is renowned for his contributions to agricultural innovation and economic development across Africa.
A 2017 World Food Prize Laureate, Adesina is celebrated for his leadership in transforming African agriculture.
Husain praised Adesina, stating, "President Adesina embodies the values and vision of Dr. Norman Borlaug—transforming bold ideas into tangible impact. His lifelong commitment to agricultural innovation and sustainability makes him an extraordinary addition to our Council of Advisors."
Adesina expressed his honor in joining the council, saying, "Dr. Norman Borlaug was not only a mentor but a personal inspiration whose passion for ending hunger shaped my journey. I look forward to advancing bold, science-driven solutions that uplift farmers and feed nations."
The Council of Advisors, comprising former heads of state, ministers, and leaders in food and agricultural science, provides insights and advice to the Foundation's board and staff. Their mission aligns with Dr. Borlaug's vision of enhancing global food security.
Adesina's career highlights include serving as Nigeria's Minister of Agriculture and spearheading initiatives that expanded agricultural production and improved credit access for farmers.
As AfDB President, he led the "High 5" Agenda, focusing on powering, feeding, industrializing, integrating, and improving life in Africa.
The World Food Prize, founded by Dr. Norman E. Borlaug, honors individuals who have significantly improved global food quality and availability.
