Airlines Suspend Shutdown of Operations

Travelers can get to airports on Monday morning as Nigerian airlines have suspended their planned shutdown of flights due to high operational costs.

On Sunday, the Airline Operators of Nigeria released a memo noting that it would give room for talks with the government.

“The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) wishes to inform the general public that further to numerous calls from the highest echelons in government with promises to urgently intervene in the crisis been faced by airlines due to the astronomic and continuously rising cost of JetA1, that the AON has acceded to requests to withdraw the action for the time being while we allow for a fresh round of dialogue with government in the hope of reaching an amicable solution,” according to the memo.

The AON also said its recent action was in consideration of fliers.

The association had notified Nigerians that flight operations would be disrupted, due to the rising cost of aviation fuel.

JetA1 fuel which used to cost N190 a litre now goes for N700, according to the AON.

This has shot up the local operating costs of the airlines to about 95% against the global industry average of 40%.
