Ajose Withdraws From Lagos APC Governorship Race, Backs Hamzat

Dr. Samuel Mawuyon Ajose has stepped down from the 2027 Lagos State governorship race, clearing the way for Deputy Governor Kadri Obafemi Hamzat to emerge as the sole aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ajose formally withdrew from the contest on Tuesday, saying he decided to support Hamzat’s ambition. With his exit, Hamzat now stands as the only aspirant ahead of the APC primary election.

“We are going to play an important role in his campaign,” Ajose said in a statement announcing his decision.

The withdrawal is expected to consolidate support for Hamzat within the ruling party and significantly strengthen his chances of emerging as the APC flagbearer for the 2027 governorship election. Party sources said the move reflects efforts to maintain unity and avoid a divisive primary in Lagos.

Ajose, a medical doctor and longtime APC chieftain, had been regarded as one of the prominent aspirants in the race before deciding to back the deputy governor.

Hamzat, who has served as Lagos State deputy governor since 2019, is now strongly positioned to secure the party’s ticket ahead of the election to succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, whose second term is expected to end in 2027.

The development comes as APC stakeholders intensify consultations aimed at presenting a consensus candidate for the Lagos governorship contest.
