Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday described the abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State as a “national tragedy,” calling it an assault on Nigeria’s collective humanity.
Addressing lawmakers at the resumption of plenary, Akpabio said the country’s inability to fully guarantee the safety of children and educators remains deeply concerning, warning that persistent insecurity threatens the nation’s future and education system.
“We resume our work under the mournful shadow of a tragedy that has shaken our nation,” he said.
He paid tribute to victims of the attack, including Michael Oyedokun, who died in captivity, Adesiyan Adegboye, who was killed during the incident, and a child victim who also lost his life. Lawmakers observed a minute’s silence in their honor.
Akpabio expressed hope that those still in captivity would regain freedom soon through ongoing rescue efforts by security agencies and government authorities.
He directed Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele to schedule a national summit on worsening insecurity across the country, as concerns grow over recurring mass kidnappings, including the May 15 attack in Oyo State where 39 pupils and seven teachers were abducted.
The Senate President also addressed internal political concerns, reassuring lawmakers who lost party nominations in recent primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying the leadership is engaging with stakeholders to manage the fallout.
