African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate Rotimi Amaechi has urged party members to put disputes over the party’s primaries behind them and focus on winning the forthcoming elections.
Amaechi made the call in Abuja on during the inauguration of the ADC Presidential Campaign Council, where he urged members to unite behind the party and approach the campaign with determination and a shared sense of responsibility.
He said opposition parties must not be intimidated by incumbent governments, which he argued often mistakenly believe they cannot be removed from power.
The former Rivers State governor drew on his experiences during previous political campaigns under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), recalling incidents in which he alleged that security officials prevented him from travelling.
Amaechi recounted being stopped at Akure Airport and advised by a military officer to leave the area because his safety could not be guaranteed.
He also recalled another incident in which he said he was prevented from flying, before political leaders intervened.
He said the experiences underscored the challenges opposition politicians could face during campaigns, urging members of the campaign council to remain courageous, persistent and united as they work towards the party’s electoral goals.
