ASUU Gives Nigerian government 4-Day Ultimatum to Implement New Salary Structure

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a four-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, demanding immediate implementation of a newly approved salary structure for university lecturers across the country.

ASUU President, Christopher Piwuna, announced the directive on Thursday while speaking at a public lecture held at Sa’adu Zungur University, Yuli Campus, in Bauchi State.

According to Piwuna, the union expects the government to commence payment under the new salary arrangement within the stipulated period or face a strong response.

“We have issued a four-day ultimatum from today to the Federal Government to begin the payment of the newly approved salary structure. Failure to comply will attract a strong response from the union,” he said.

He explained that the demand is part of broader efforts to improve lecturers’ welfare and address persistent concerns over poor remuneration, which he noted has contributed to brain drain and declining standards in Nigeria’s university system.

Piwuna also lamented the government’s inconsistent implementation of previous agreements with the union, a development he said has fueled recurring disputes and industrial actions over the years.

Observers warn that the latest ultimatum could escalate tensions between ASUU and the Federal Government, raising fears of another nationwide strike if the demands are not met within the deadline.

ASUU has a long history of embarking on industrial actions to press its demands, often disrupting academic calendars in public universities and affecting millions of students nationwide.
