ASUU Strike: NANS, Northern Coalition Plan Zonal Protest

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has threatened to pass a vote of no confidence on the Ministers of Education and Labour, Adamu Adamu, and Chris Ngige.

This is due to their failure to resolve the lingering strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The Vice President of NANS, Yazeed Tanko Muhammad disclosed this at an emergency press conference organized by the Kano State chapter of the Coalition of Northern Groups (SE-CNG) to address the strike.

Mr. Muhammad expressed dismay over the “nonchalant” attitude of the Federal Government, as well as the striking lecturers to reach an agreement.

He, however, disclosed that NANS has given the Federal Government a one-week ultimatum to resolve the issues with ASUU.

“Our leaders have continued to fail us. We have spent about 5 months at home now and they are yet to reach an agreement.

“It is clear that they don’t care about Nigerian students.

We are giving them one week to do needful or we will pass the vote of no confidence on them. This is sad,” he said.

The Kano State Coordinator of the Coalition of Northern Groups (SE-CNG), Ambassador Khaleefa Nura Babuji said the prolonged strike has exposed Nigerian students to social vices like drug abuse, violence, teenage pregnancy, and thuggery.

Ambassador Khaleefa however disclosed that the coalition is mobilizing students and parents to a massive zonal protest to express their grievances.

“The strike has exposed students to social vices. Every day we kept hearing about crimes committed by students.

“All these are happening as a result of the lingering strike.

“If they fail to resolve the strike, we will mobilize a massive zonal protest for students and parents to show our concerns.“
