Atiku Commends Nigerians’ Pushback as Federal Government Suspends Exam Fee Increase

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has welcomed the Federal Government’s suspension of the proposed increase in WAEC and NECO registration fees, describing the decision as a victory for Nigerian parents, students and civil society groups.

In a statement, Atiku said the reversal validated concerns he had earlier raised that increasing examination costs could worsen educational inequality, deepen the out-of-school children crisis and prevent some students from pursuing higher education.

The former presidential candidate, however, criticised the government for waiting until widespread public opposition before reversing what he described as a policy that should not have been introduced.

He accused the administration of announcing harsh policies without adequate consultation, saying responsible governance requires engaging stakeholders before decisions are made rather than after public backlash.

Atiku said the proposed fee increase would have created another financial burden for families already struggling with inflation, rising transport costs, increased electricity tariffs and reduced purchasing power.

He commended parents, teachers, labour organisations, student groups, education stakeholders and other Nigerians who opposed the policy, saying their actions showed the importance of citizens holding government accountable.

The former vice president said the suspension should not end discussions on examination funding, urging the Federal Government to work with stakeholders to develop a sustainable funding model for WAEC and NECO without shifting the burden to families.

Atiku also accused the administration of repeatedly introducing policies and reversing them after public resistance, describing the approach as poor policy formulation.

He said the 2027 elections would give Nigerians an opportunity to choose between what he described as “trial and error” governance and experienced leadership.
