Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has mourned the death of veteran Nigerian actor and film executive Olu Jacobs, describing him as an institution and a cultural icon.
Jacobs died on Wednesday at the age of 84, with his death announced by his son, Olusoji Jacobs.
In a condolence message posted on his X account, Atiku said Nigeria had lost more than a great actor, describing Jacobs as “one of the finest ambassadors of our creative spirit.”
He said Jacobs had been a familiar and commanding presence in the homes of Nigerians for generations, highlighting his distinctive voice, dignity and talent.
According to Atiku, Jacobs’ contribution to the creative industry began long before Nollywood became a global phenomenon.
He said the veteran actor helped lay the foundations for the Nigerian film industry through decades of dedication to his craft, while inspiring younger actors who followed the path he helped establish.
Atiku also described Jacobs’ death as a loss that would be deeply felt by Nigerians who watched and admired his work over the years.
“The curtain may have fallen on an extraordinary life, but the characters he gave us, the standards he set and the generations he inspired will continue to speak for him,” Atiku said.
He extended his condolences to Jacobs’ wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, their children and the entire Jacobs family.
Atiku also commiserated with the Nollywood community, the wider African creative industry and Jacobs’ admirers around the world.
He prayed for the repose of Jacobs’ soul and for comfort for his family.
Jacobs was one of Nigeria’s most prominent veteran actors, with a career spanning theatre, British television, international film and Nollywood. His death has prompted tributes from political leaders, actors and other members of Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
