The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, has expressed confidence in the 10 African nations competing at the FIFA World Cup 2026, describing their participation as a source of pride for the continent.
In a statement by Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, the AU Commission Chairperson said the record number of African teams at the tournament reflects the growing strength of African football and the talent, resilience and determination of the continent's players.
“This record level of African participation reflects the continued rise of African football and the talent, resilience, and determination of its players. It is a moment of continental pride, uniting Africans across all regions in shared hope and celebration,” he said.
Youssouf noted that the World Cup remains a unique global event that brings nations together through sport, adding that football continues to serve as a platform for peace and unity.
“The World Cup is where the world meets in peace through sport,” he said.
The AU Commission Chairperson also highlighted the role of young people in the continent's football success, saying Africa's performance on the global stage reflects the strength and potential of its youth.
“Africa’s strength in football reflects the strength of its youth,” he said, adding that the teams represent not only their respective countries but also the aspirations of millions of young Africans.
He commended the players, coaches, officials and supporters whose efforts made qualification possible and urged the teams to compete with excellence, discipline, integrity and respect for fair play.
As the tournament gets underway, Youssouf reaffirmed the African Union's support for Africa's representatives and expressed hope that their performances would inspire the continent, strengthen international friendship and further elevate Africa's profile in global football.
