Australia will officially recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly in September, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced on Monday.
Albanese said the move follows weeks of pressure from members of his Cabinet and growing calls across the country, amid what he described as the “humanitarian catastrophe” in Gaza.
The Australian government has also condemned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recently announced plans for a major new military offensive in Gaza.
According to Albanese, the recognition is based on commitments Australia has secured from the Palestinian Authority. The decision aligns Australia with countries such as France, Britain, and Canada, whose leaders have signaled readiness to extend similar recognition.
