Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, has urged Nigerians to renew their faith in the country and remain committed to building a stronger, more prosperous and secure nation as Nigeria marks its 66th Independence Anniversary.
Barau, in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, congratulated Nigerians on the anniversary and called for greater commitment to the ideals of national unity, peace, justice and development.
The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, a public holiday to commemorate the country’s Independence Day.
Barau urged Nigerians to reflect on the country’s journey since independence and remember the contributions of the nation’s founding fathers and others who participated in the struggle for independence and the subsequent development of the country.
He said the sacrifices of those who contributed to Nigeria’s independence should continue to guide citizens in promoting unity, tolerance and shared national progress.
The deputy Senate president acknowledged that Nigeria had made progress in the 66 years since independence, while also recognising the challenges facing the country.
He expressed optimism that the country could overcome its present difficulties through what he described as unity of purpose, resilience and faith in Nigerians’ collective capacity.
Barau also called on Nigerians to support President Bola Tinubu’s administration in implementing policies and programmes under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
He said cooperation between citizens and government would help create a stronger, more prosperous and secure Nigeria, while urging Nigerians to play their part in the nation-building process.
Barau, who is also the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, said the National Assembly remained committed to providing the legislative framework needed to address challenges confronting the country.
He specifically pointed to the State Police Bill currently before state Houses of Assembly, saying its passage by the state legislatures and subsequent presidential assent could strengthen internal security and help address security challenges in parts of the country.
The deputy Senate president said the National Assembly would continue to work with the executive, within the framework of the Constitution, on legislation and policies aimed at promoting economic growth, security, development and improved living conditions.
He wished Nigerians a peaceful and memorable 66th Independence Anniversary.
