Boat Capsizes on Nigeria-Cameroon Waterway, 20 Feared Dead

More than 20 people are feared dead after a passenger boat capsized along the Nigeria-Cameroon waterway during a late-night journey from Garoua in northern Cameroon to Yola, Adamawa State.

The boat, which was carrying more than 50 passengers and a large consignment of construction materials, reportedly departed despite warnings from residents to delay the trip because of worsening weather conditions.

According to eyewitnesses and local sources, the vessel encountered a violent storm around midnight before overturning in Cameroonian waters along the Nigeria-Cameroon border.

Local authorities have confirmed at least 20 deaths, while search and rescue operations are continuing amid fears that the death toll could rise.

Several bodies have been recovered, and survivors are receiving treatment at hospitals in border communities.

Authorities in Nigeria and Cameroon are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, including reports that the boat set sail despite adverse weather warnings. Rescue efforts remain ongoing.
