Ibrahim Traoré has called on the country to move away from democratic governance, describing democracy as “slavery” in a televised interview.
The Burkinabè leader said his government is focused on what he described as a national “refoundation” and revolutionary agenda.
Traoré, who came to power after a 2022 coup in Burkina Faso, had earlier promised a return to elections, but that timeline has yet to materialise.
His remarks come amid wider political shifts in the Sahel, where Mali and Niger are also under military rule.
The three countries have since exited Economic Community of West African States and formed a new alliance.
Despite the military governments’ stance, insecurity remains widespread, with large areas outside state control and millions displaced by ongoing violence.
