Canada Confirms Four Dead, Dozens Injured in Military Base Explosion

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has confirmed that four military personnel were killed, and dozens seriously injured in an explosion and fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta.

The blast occurred on Saturday afternoon, triggering a fire that spread beyond the training area amid strong winds. Military and civilian emergency crews battled the blaze overnight while medical teams treated the injured.

Carney said the victims’ next of kin had been notified and ordered flags on federal buildings to fly at half-staff in their honour.

“As the situation is evolving rapidly, I have asked that a detailed account and a formal briefing be provided this afternoon by senior officials on the ground in Wainwright,” he said.

The prime minister praised emergency responders and medical personnel for their efforts, assuring victims’ families that the government would provide support.

The cause of the explosion remains under investigation. Reports citing military sources suggest it may have occurred during a live-fire training exercise, but authorities have not confirmed this.

Wainwright houses the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre, where soldiers prepare for combat operations.
