Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa has urged Nigerian authorities to strengthen democratic institutions, improve security, and ensure economic justice ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued in Abuja after a board meeting, the group warned that Nigeria’s democratic stability depends on credible elections, transparent institutions, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
“The credibility of the elections will depend on the resolve of government at all levels, institutions, and political actors to uphold the rule of law,” CAPPA said.
The organization called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to begin early preparations to ensure free, fair, and violence-free elections, adding that voter suppression and intimidation must be eliminated.
It also urged the judiciary to resist any attempt to undermine the electoral process and called on political parties to strengthen internal democracy and curb vote-buying.
“As Nigeria prepares for its next general elections, this is a critical moment to reset national priorities,” the group said.
CAPPA also raised concerns over worsening insecurity, noting that killings, kidnappings, and ransom payments continue despite high security spending.
“It is deeply troubling that senseless killings, kidnappings, and violent attacks persist across various parts of the country,” the organization said.
On the economy, CAPPA said reforms such as fuel subsidy removal have not eased hardship, warning that inflation, unemployment, and poverty remain high.
It urged greater accountability in public spending and investment in healthcare, education, and other social services to cushion economic pressures on citizens.
CAPPA reaffirmed its commitment to working with civil society and the media to promote accountability and public participation in governance.
