CBN Reaffirms Both ₦100 Banknotes Remain Legal Tender

The Central Bank of Nigeria on Wednesday moved to end confusion over the ₦100 note, clarifying that both the standard and commemorative versions remain valid currency and must be accepted for all transactions nationwide.

In a press release, the CBN said it had noted reports of members of the public, businesses and other stakeholders rejecting the standard ₦100 banknote, apparently over doubts about its continued legal tender status.

"For the avoidance of doubt, the CBN hereby reiterates that both the commemorative ₦100 banknote and the standard ₦100 banknote remain legal tender in Nigeria and must be accepted for all transactions nationwide," the bank said.

The confusion appears to stem from the commemorative ₦100 note issued to mark Nigeria's centenary.

The CBN said that note was introduced alongside, not in place of, the existing standard ₦100 bill.

The apex bank cautioned individuals, businesses and financial institutions against refusing the standard note, warning that doing so breaches the CBN Act and erodes public confidence in the Naira.

The bank said it would not hesitate to enforce compliance against violators.

The clarification was issued by Hakama Sidi-Ali, Acting Director of Corporate Communications at the CBN, dated July 8, 2026.

The CBN urged the public to accept all banknotes it has legally issued and directed anyone seeking further clarification to reach the bank through its official communication channels.
