The Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted 10,126 parcels of Cannabis sativa in different parts of Ogun State, with a Duty Paid Value estimated at N743.4 million.
The seizure was made by the Ogun One Area Command of the Service and later handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in Idiroko on Tuesday.
Speaking during the handover, the Area Comptroller, Olukayode Afeni, described the operation as a preventive effort aimed at protecting society from the harmful effects of drug abuse.
Afeni said cannabis, popularly known as marijuana, remains a psychoactive substance with serious health and social consequences for users and communities.
According to him, allowing the drugs into circulation could have worsened drug-related crimes and placed additional pressure on the country’s healthcare, psychiatric and rehabilitation facilities.
Receiving the seized items on behalf of the NDLEA, Williams Ekundayo commended Customs officers for the interception, describing it as another major breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking.
He also called for stronger collaboration between the NDLEA and the Nigeria Customs Service to curb the movement of illicit drugs across borders.
Ekundayo warned individuals involved in drug trafficking to abandon the illegal trade or face arrest and prosecution by law enforcement agencies.
