Datti Baba-Ahmed Denies Declaring for Nigeria’s 2027 Presidential Race

Former Labour Party vice-presidential nominee Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed has denied reports that he has formally declared his intention to run for Nigeria’s presidency in 2027.

Baba-Ahmed told journalists on Friday, that comments he made recently were misconstrued and did not signal a decision to contest the nation’s top office.

Speaking on Channels Television, the ex-Labour Party deputy standard-bearer stressed that his remarks simply reaffirmed his continued membership in the party amid ongoing discussions about its direction and leadership.

He said no official announcement has been made regarding a presidential bid.

“I never declared to contest the presidency even though there could be a possibility of that happening.”

Baba-Ahmed said, adding that any formal expression of interest would await a timetable from the Independent National Electoral Commission and his party’s internal procedures.

He also criticised misinformation circulating on social media, urging established news organisations to help stem what he described as misleading narratives.

Baba-Ahmed’s clarification comes amid media reports that he said he would seek higher office following shifts within Nigeria’s opposition landscape.
