Dealing With Depression In Families

According to the American Psychiatric Association, Depression is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. It causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed. It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease your ability to function at work and at home.

What are the common causes of depression in families? How can you tell when a family member is depressed? These are some of the questions the Tekes sought to answer on Family Talk on Whaats Up Lagos.

While sharing her personal experience, one caller says family members have a huge role to play in helping their loved ones get past depression.

“I was once depressed but my family members helped me a lot especially my brother’s wife. Since then, I try to help people by giving them a listening ear,” she explained.

Another caller explains to the Tekes how depressed his wife has become because of the death of her colleague.
