Authorities have launched an investigation into the train derailment along the Warri–Itakpe rail corridor near Agbor in Delta State, which left four people dead and several others injured.
The Federal Ministry of Transport confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday, noting that emergency response and rescue operations are still ongoing. The Permanent Secretary, Funsho Adebiyi, said a full probe has begun to determine the cause of the accident.
According to the ministry, four coaches capsized while one coach derailed. A total of 482 passengers, including crew members, security personnel, and service providers, were onboard at the time of the incident.
Twenty-four passengers sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment. The ministry added that efforts are ongoing to identify all affected persons and provide support to victims and their families.
Officials from the Nigeria Railway Corporation said the wreckage is still being cleared nearly 24 hours after the crash. Recovery teams have been cutting through vegetation to access the site and retrieve luggage and personal belongings.
The corporation is working alongside the Federal Ministry of Transport, security agencies, and emergency responders to manage the aftermath.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has also deployed a response team to assist with rescue and recovery efforts.
Officials extended condolences to the families of the deceased and assured the public that a thorough investigation will be carried out to prevent a recurrence of such incidents.
