Denmark’s Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, has called on the European Union to consider suspending Spain from the Schengen free movement area following a major migrant surge into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.
Frederiksen said uncontrolled migration poses a threat to Europe and urged the EU to consider all available options, including suspending Schengen cooperation.
The crisis began after tens of thousands of migrants crossed from Morocco into Ceuta, with regional authorities reporting that about 60,000 people entered the territory.
Spanish authorities have since deployed troops, police, drones and boats to strengthen security, while Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez visited the enclave.
Spain’s Interior Ministry says about 25,000 migrants have voluntarily returned to Morocco.
The migrant surge has also heightened diplomatic tensions, with Italy, Finland and Denmark supporting tougher measures, while Germany has called on Morocco to immediately take back migrants who entered Spain illegally.
