Defence Headquarters Sets Up Court Martial Over Alleged Mutiny Plot

Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters has inaugurated a General Court Martial to try 36 serving military personnel over an alleged mutiny aimed at overthrowing the government.

The move follows an earlier announcement by the DHQ on January 26, 2026, which signalled the start of disciplinary proceedings on the matter.

According to the military high command, the court martial is part of efforts to reinforce discipline, accountability and loyalty within the Armed Forces.

The DHQ says the trial will be conducted fairly and impartially, with strict adherence to due process and established military legal procedures.

It also assured that the rights of the accused personnel will be respected, with a guarantee of fair hearing throughout the proceedings.

The statement was signed by Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information.
