Doctors Suspend Services in Edo Over Abduction of Colleagues

Doctors in Edo State have suspended medical services across the state following the abduction of two of their colleagues.

The Edo State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association says the action, which takes effect from Saturday, is in protest against rising insecurity and repeated attacks on health workers.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, NMA Chairman in the state, Dr. Eustace Oseghale, says doctors can no longer guarantee their safety while carrying out their duties.

He says the kidnappings, which occurred on January 1 and 2, have heightened fear among medical practitioners.
One of the abducted doctors, Dr. Babatunde Abu, was kidnapped in Auchi, with abductors reportedly demanding a one-hundred-million-naira ransom.

The association says it will not resume services until the abducted doctors are released and concrete security measures are put in place.
