DSS Arrests Man Linked to Assault on Peter Obi, Others in Edo

The Department of State Services (DSS) has apprehended a suspect believed to be connected to a recent violent incident involving former presidential candidate Peter Obi and other political figures in Benin City, Edo State.

The suspect, identified as Udeme Sunday Stephen, was taken into custody after investigators reportedly linked him to the attack that occurred last week at the residence of a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Benin City.

The DSS said the arrest was the outcome of a covert investigation following threats posted on social media that appeared to claim responsibility for the violence.

According to the DSS source, forensic analysis and intelligence efforts helped track Stephen down.

He is expected to be charged in court as the investigation continues.

The attack in Edo, which drew widespread condemnation, happened shortly after Obi and some ADC leaders attended a political engagement.

The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate was reportedly attacked at the residence of a party chieftain, raising concerns about political violence in the region.

Details about the suspect’s alleged motive were not immediately released, but the DSS emphasised its commitment to protecting citizens and investigating credible threats, regardless of political affiliation.

The arrest marks a significant development in the ongoing probe into the attack.
