DSS Rearrests Emefiele After Fight with Prison Officials

The Department of State Services (DSS) has rearrested the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele.

DSS officials took him after a physical fight with officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service in front of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos.

The two government agencies were fighting over who was to take custody of the CBN's former governor.

Emefiele was brought to court Tuesday morning by the DSS, which arraigned him on a two-count charge of illegal possession of arms and ammunition.

He pleaded not guilty, and Justice Nicholas Oweibo granted him bail in the sum of N20 million.

The judge also asked that he be remanded in the custody of the correctional service pending the perfection of the bail.

Emefiele was led outside the court by correctional service officials who were stopped by DSS officials who demanded they hand over the CBN governor.

The refusal of the prison officials led to the fight, after which the DSS rearrested Emefiele.
