DSS Summons Omoyele Sowore Over ‘False, Malicious’ Post Against President Tinubu

The Department of State Services (DSS) has summoned activist, Omoyele Sowore, over what it described as a “false and malicious” social media post against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a letter dated September 7, 2025, signed by Uwem Davies on behalf of the Director-General, the DSS ordered Sowore to retract his August 26 post on X (formerly Twitter) where he allegedly referred to the President as a “criminal” while mocking his statement on corruption in Brazil.

The Service said the post was “repugnant, derogatory and capable of inciting public disturbance,” and demanded that Sowore:

  • Issue an unequivocal retraction on X,
  • Publish a public apology in at least two national newspapers and two television stations, and
  • Submit a representation to DSS headquarters in Abuja or via email within one week.

The United States Embassy in Abuja was also copied in the letter.

The DSS warned that Sowore’s remarks could harm the President’s reputation, foster disunity, or trigger unrest, adding: “Persons of your status who are campaigning to lead this country must exercise restraint and responsibility in their speech.”

The Service said it would not hesitate to take lawful action if he failed to comply and stressed its commitment to countering misinformation capable of undermining national unity.
