The second edition of the Niger Delta Games Edo 2026 officially began on Saturday at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, showcasing Nigeria’s renewed focus on grassroots sports development and youth engagement.
Philip Shaibu, Director General of the National Institute for Sports, praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his vision in advancing sports nationwide.
He described the Games as “a practical reflection of the Federal Government’s commitment to rebuilding Nigerian sports from the foundation.”
Shaibu emphasized that structured competitions like the Niger Delta Games give young athletes exposure, mentorship, and career pathways.
“Sports is a strategic tool for national unity, economic growth, and community development. Initiatives like this help reduce youth restiveness and social vices through positive engagement,” he said, commending the Niger Delta Development Commission for sustaining youth-focused sporting programs.

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo welcomed participants, assuring them of security and hospitality throughout the competition.
He announced a ₦20 million prize for overall winners and ₦10 million for runners-up, urging athletes to compete with fairness and sportsmanship.
The opening ceremony reached a symbolic peak when former Victor Ikpeba, ex-Super Eagles star, lit the Games Torch, officially declaring the event open.
The Games bring together athletes from nine Niger Delta states, many competing at the inter-state level for the first time, providing a platform for talent discovery and fostering regional sports excellence
